    gwt and extjs

I have been using gwt-ext for several months and now that library owner has decided to stop his work on it due to some licensing changes of the core javascript ExtJs library from lgpl to gpl. My options now are to use the ExtJs javascript libary or the gwt library that ExtJs now has, or your library. Can you posisbly convince me of the reasons to purchase a commercial license for your software instead of the ext-gwt library or the ExtJs library. We are java programmers and thats why the ExtGwt library looks nice cause it lets us program the gui using java. Thanks for your feedback!

    Hi ttbsoftware,

    In a nutshell:

    1) SmartClient is years ahead in maturity, features and documentation as compared to other Ajax platforms (see eg a list of features only SmartClient has)

    2) If you are considering switching to working with JavaScript directly rather than through GWT, SmartClient has much lower requirements in terms of HTML/CSS/Ajax skills than other Ajax technologies. Everything is object oriented JavaScript, no guru-level HTML/CSS skills required.

    3) If you choose to use just SmartClient LGPL, we will never switch licenses on you.

As far going for a full commercial license, this Summary of Server Features should help - SmartClient goes well beyond GWT-RPC and is much simpler.

We'd encourage you to take a very deep look. SmartClient has been evaluated against other technologies many times, and the evaluators who look closest are the ones that pick SmartClient.

There are now lots of java developers who are going to be looking for another web UI toolkit. Would you consider creating a thin java GWT wrapper around SmartClient in the same way that GWT-Ext did for ExtJS? Maybe even get Sanjiv to do it for you now he's stepping down from GWT-Ext.

Yes, if you could team up with Sanjiv, he could really get a lot of NEW business for you guys if he created a GWT wrapper.

Yes, we are strongly considering doing this, in fact, we have already approached Sanjiv. We will keep you posted on what develops.

In the meantime, if you want to use SmartClient but stay out of the wild and wooly world of JavaScript, note that you can create SmartClient widgets in XML as well, and also that Visual Builder (in the Enterprise Edition evaluation pack) allows you to do initial screen design in a drag and drop manner, without writing any code.

I agree with the idea to work with Sanjiv in order to wrap your library for pure java developper.
GWT-Smart would be nice to hear.
            Thanks.

wow. I had no idea about SmartClient until I read Sanjiv's blog. What you have looks amazing and I can't wait for a GWT wrapper. Please keep me updated on your conversations with Sanjiv.

Personally after the bait and switch that Ext has done, I wouldn't touch anything they offer.

                GWT-SmartClient

We certainly need a GWT wrapper for SmartClient. I've recently discovered SmartClient and it's just amazing how complete it is.

How do you guys think the SmartClient DataSource concept would fit in with GWT?

Anyways, I'm looking forward to hearing some news on this story. Please keep us posted!

Thanks and keep up the good work.

                  Hi All,

So in fact a project to build a GWT wrapper for SmartClient is underway and has been underway for some time, and Sanjiv is part of the team.

We've officially announced it now - we're thinking of some kind of preview release in late October to early November. The code will probably be available on Google Code even before then, but in a very early state.

If you want to get started today, the best approach might be to use the SmartClient XML format for declaring UI. It's likely we will make it possible to use this format in SmartGWT.
