reading this post I realized that in the SmartGWT docs for CanvasItem you can see the Direct Known Subclasses, while this is not true for the Reference docs for CanvasItem.
There you can only see the superclass CanvasItem in e.g. SectionItem.
This is not an urgent matter for me (I'm using SmartGWT anyway), but might be a useful enhancement for other users and for you.
