Single Sign On question

The following is a newbie question (new to GWT, new to SmartGWT, new to web applications), so forgive my ignorance (I have been searching hi and lo but can't get a handle on this):

I'm developing a web app with Smart GWT 2.0 and the customer wants a "single-sign-on" based on Active Directory.

Can someone pls point me to a link which explains how to go about this?
Nothing I have found so far tells me, how/where to start.

I'm currently evaluating SmartClient and one thing that I need to be able to do is automatically pickup the logged in use (on corporate Active Directory) so that no log in is required and access is provided based on their Active Directory account and roles in a SQL Server database.

looks like that this is not possible from within the browser! (At least that is what I learned)
It must be done via some seesion management...
