I keep seeing references/usages of some dialog/login widget in JavaScript code in this forum. But is there such a thing for SmartGWT, ie without having to generate inline JS code?

It does not exist in Smart GWT presently. It's easy to create yourself. You can follow this tutorial to implement a login dialog with the relogin workflow.
