Note that having mutually exclusive selection for some parents mixed with cascading or normal selection for other parents is a valid feature sponsorship if you're interested.. although that Delphi article does appear to provide sample code that is very close to what you'll need to write for SmartGWT (of course the code is in Delphi).

We've made a change to the 3.1d branch to address the fact that an override to getExtraIcon() is failing to get called. This will show up in nightly builds going forward.
We've also added a new method 'isOverExtraIcon()' [returns a boolean - true if the user is over an icon], so you can apply special handling for extra-icon click via standard nodeClick (and similar) methods.
