DataSource - client or server side?

SmartGWT 2.4 (eval)

I am trying to create a DMI custom DS based off the example code without luck so far. My DMI class needs to use some jars that are not client-side friendly and I am wondering if this is the problem.

Are DS instances instantiated on the client (js) or the server (java)?
