How do I pass data from SmartGWT to a portlet

I am using SmartGWT 2.5.

I have some SmartGWT widgets that have been wrapped into a Liferay portlet (version 6.0.6). I need to pass data between the portlet and the SmartGWT widget.

Can someone tell me the best way to pass information between a portlet and the SmartGWT widget that is part of that portlet?
