Can FormulaEditor be put to custom use?

Can the formula editor dialog be used with an arbitrary list of fields? I'd like to create a similar feature where users can define a formula but then have that formula applied to a Record that is not part of a ListGrid. Are there any apis to make use of the Formula Editor outside of the ListGrid context?

At the moment, there's no way to directly launch a FormulaBuilder and obtain a representation of it's formula that could be evaluated outside the context of a grid. However this makes sense as a sponsorship, and would be relatively smaller (mostly docs rather than new implementation).
