Inconsistency behavior for column width in List Grid for Date Field

Issue:
1. In the above sample UI, uncheck all columns & keep only "Ship Date" column. Column width is not changed.
2. Uncheck all columns & keep any column other than "Ship Date", Column width is resized to width of the List Grid.
My observation is, only for Date field, column width is not changed.
Is there any reason for the above inconsistent behaviour?
Any suggestions to overcome this ?

Columns of type "date" and certain other columns, such as icon columns, cannot make use of any more room than the space required to show their content, so by default, they receive a fixed width and do not expand. You can override this by simply specifying a width.
