tab's can close prevents a normal icon from appearing

For tabs, if I set the "setcanclose" to true, I can't have a separate icon appear. It seems only one of the icons is allowed at a time, even though by default the "close" icon is on the right hand side of the tab and the "developer specified icon" is on the left hand side of the tab. Is there a workaround?
