How do custom styleNames work in SmartGWT? (coloring grid rows)

When I set my own styleName (using "_baseStyle" property) to a Record the styleName (CSS-class) does not get applied until I move cursor over the record at least one time.
First I thought this was a bug, but I'm having hard times believing no one tried to color records in a grid before.
What am I doing wrong please?

Try posting a standalone test case and perhaps someone can point out the error.

Well, I tried to re-create the original "solution" (after deciding to use a workaround) and I am unable to make it wrong this time.
The "_baseStyle" attribute kinda works. :)
