embedding an applet and interacting with it

I know it is possible to embed an applet with a smartclient page but is there a way to retrieve an output from the applet to send back to the server?

You can do so by interacting with the Java Applet via JavaScript - it's essentially to-the-metal JavaScript coding which will differ from Applet to Applet.
