Change options available in ComboBoxItem

I've got a ComboBoxItem within a ListGrid that has a valueMap defined.
I want to offer or take away one of the options depending on an outside bit.

Am I wrong to override getClientPickListData to achieve this? I also tried setting getPickListFilterCriteria with no luck.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
