Evaluating SmartClient and have a few questions.

    Hello,

I am in the middle of evaluating SmartClient against Dojo and ExtJS and I have a couple of questions hopefully the SmartClient choir might be able to answer.

    1) there are twice as many SmartGWT posts as there are standard clients posts. Is there a reason for that? We plan on using it for both .Net and Java. Also can anything that is said in SmartGWT be considered to be the same in SmartClient. (Example: localization support is stated in SmartClient forum but could not find it in the Smart GWT forum).

    2) Can you point me to your AutoComplete Widget?

    3) I know you have a list of feature comparisons on the site. Is there an updated one where it compares it with Dojo and ExtJS and not Flex.

    4) What are the handful of features that brought people to SmartClient over Dojo and ExtJS (looking for user to pipe in).

Thanks for your time and looking foward to your thoughts. I would have posted this in a general area but did not find one.

    1. Since they are basically the same product (same runtime, same features, same pricing) this just indicates that enterprise developers seem to prefer Java overall. Also, seems like you have your statements about i18n forums posts reversed, but regardless, the same set of features applies and the language packs are the same.

    2. ComboBoxItem

3 & 4. ExtJS is already there, Dojo is omitted because we feel it has lost relevance in enterprise applications (seldom if ever comes up as a comparison technology anymore).

Thanks for your response. Couple of followup questions.

      1) Does SmartClient included a way to minimize code? If so, is their a link to how this is accomplished?

      2) Is there a sample project that shows how one might do both a desktop and mobile version of an app with the framework?

      3) Is there a site URL that points to what most would consider a great example of SmartClient in Action?

        1) do you mean removing whitespace (yes: the FileAssembler) or reducing the amount you need to write (yes: see QuickStart Guide, Server Framework chapter for one of the larger reductions).

        2) there's more than one way to do this - take a look at the SmartGWT.mobile questions in the SmartGWT FAQ.

        3) there's the Customer Showcase. Keep in mind there aren't many examples of free, publicly accessible SmartClient-based applications because most enterprise applications either work with confidential data or require payment to access.
