PIckLists - trying to catch attention

Can someone please tell me why a PickList that has optionDataSource set does not expose incremental search? Same PickList but with a ValueMap works fine???? What's a difference from user's point of view? Does he care how the control is populated? What's even more interesting that the same PickList wiht the same DS will be exposing incremental search properly if I use it in the ListGrid. ???
Could you please provide some explainations or samples?
